Kitchen Comedy, Served Hot with Chef Jerry Mai & comedian Alex Ward

I&J’s new series of short videos Chef vs Cook serves up seafood with a side of humour, starring comedian Alex Ward and acclaimed chef Jerry Mai.

You may recognise talented stand-up comedian Alex from her appearances on Have You Been Paying Attention, The Project and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Gala. Meanwhile Chef Jerry is an ‘Executive Chef, Restaurateur and (self-proclaimed) Troublemaker’, a regular guest on cooking shows including MasterChef Australia, Executive Chef of Roll’d Australia, and owner of two Vietnamese eateries in Melbourne.

Together the pair showcase I&J seafood, demonstrating practical and profitable ways to use these tasty and convenient frozen products on your menu, while having a few laughs along the way.

“I can’t believe those came out of a box!” In Episode 1, Chef Jerry shows Alex how to make a killer Battered Flathead Burger using I&J’s South American Crispy Battered Flathead Fillets. Alex is blown away by the quality of the frozen flathead. These hand-filleted, hand-battered wild-caught fillets hit all the marks – timesaving, consistent and always crispy thanks to I&J’s signature batter.

“These are somewhat adorable” Episode 2 sees Chef Jerry and Alex having fun making Hot Honey Prawn Pops and eating them like lollipops. Made with sustainably farmed prawns and fish and hand coated in bite-sized 15g portions, I&J Battered Prawn Pops are ‘somewhat adorable’ according to Alex. “I’m actually overwhelmed; these are so delicious!” Also in this ep, Alex prepares a dish using I&J MSC-certified Battered Australian Hoki Bites, deep frying them for five minutes then garnishing with chilli mayo, avocado and furikake.

“It’s so light!” Both the I&J Battered Prawn Pops and Battered Australian Hoki Bites are formulated without gluten*, making them a versatile addition to platters, bar snack menus or finger food for events. “The batter is so crispy, you couldn’t tell it was gluten-friendly!” exclaims Chef Jerry.

Alex agrees, confirming that she “wouldn’t blink an eye” if she was served Hoki Bites with Chilli Mayo and Furikake in a fine dining restaurant. As Alex picks up plenty of pro tips, Chef Jerry reveals why she chooses I&J: “The flavour is consistent, the size is consistent... because consistency is the key to success.”
